Newly reinstated U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced significant policy changes impacting the technology and energy sectors. Through executive orders signed on January 20, Trump reversed key initiatives from the previous administration, reshaping the country’s stance on electric vehicles (EVs), artificial intelligence (AI), and energy sustainability.

Electric Car Incentives Canceled

One of the major shifts involves the cancellation of policies promoting electric cars and charging stations. Trump stated his intent to “promote true consumer choice” by removing incentives for EVs and subsidies for charging infrastructure. This decision eliminates government pressure on automakers to produce EVs and suspends discounts for individuals and businesses purchasing these vehicles.

Additionally, subsidized charging station programs will face cuts, with existing contracts likely to be reviewed. Trump also announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, prioritizing traditional energy sources such as oil exploration and reducing sustainability-focused projects.

Ironically, this policy shift occurs under a government that includes Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and a prominent electric vehicle advocate. Tesla remains one of the leading companies producing exclusively battery-powered cars.

AI Regulation Revoked

Trump has also repealed an executive order on artificial intelligence (AI) implemented during Biden’s presidency. The previous regulation required companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta to share safety test results and other critical information before launching AI services.

By removing these regulations, AI firms are no longer obligated to conduct comprehensive safety disclosures, potentially accelerating innovation but raising concerns about public safety and security risks. The president has yet to outline a replacement framework for overseeing AI development.

TikTok Gets an Extension

In a related move, Trump extended the deadline for TikTok to secure a North American buyer by an additional 75 days. This allows more time for negotiations to avoid the app’s suspension in the U.S.

A New Energy and Technology Landscape

Trump’s decisions mark a drastic shift in U.S. energy and tech policies, prioritizing traditional energy sources and deregulation over environmental sustainability and AI safety oversight. These changes are likely to have far-reaching implications for the global technology landscape and U.S. innovation leadership.

Stay tuned for further updates as the new administration’s policies take shape.
