Established in 2004 by the European Union, Safer Internet Day (SID) is an international day of awareness for the risks entailed in using the Internet.
It occurs on the second day of the second week of February of each year. Safer Internet Day is a global event that dignifies awareness about online safety and encourages every person to help create a better internet. The Safer Internet Day has been celebrated for the second time in Nepal. How safely do you use the internet? Safer Internet Day is observed to promote safer, more responsible use of the internet and is especially relevant for Nepal, where a majority of the end-users are very casual about internet security.
In Nepal, the npCert (Information Security Response Team Nepal), Center For Cyber Security Research and Innovation, One Cover Private Limited are organizing In association with Texas College of Management and IT responsible for Child online protection and promoting Safer Internet Day. The Supporting partners are DIT Solutions, Sarvanam Software, ICT Frame Magazine, Gadgetframe, Livenp, Hellosamaj, Techsathi, TechPatro, Biz Sagar, College of Information Technology & Engineering, etc.
It’s no secret—using the internet can be risky. Simply scrolling through the Snapchat Discover screen can put your child’s privacy at risk. ICT companies collect everything from names and addresses to genders and locations. This can lead to identity theft, child predators, and targeted advertising. And sadly, no adult or child is immune to data dangers. Nepal needs to move from seeing ‘protecting children’ merely as a response to abuse and neglect to one of promoting the safety and wellbeing of children. There is a demand for a separate law to regulate children’s social media exposure in Nepal.
